This year marks the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese landing in Macau, the Chinese Special Administrative Region most visited on a day trip from Hong Kong or en route to Australia.

The destination's odd blend of Chinese and Portuguese architecture makes it a unique – if slightly bizarre – place to spend a few days. Plus, with its glamorous casino scene, there's enough to keep a daytripper amused in its 11 square miles.

And with 2013 being its 500th anniversary of the Portuguese first landing in Macau, what better excuse to spend a night tucking into its most famous snack – the Portuguese egg custard tart?
