DO: San Diego Loews Surf Dog competition, 21 June

Dogs! On surfboards! Just to reiterate, that's dogs, in wetsuits, on surfboards. Around 50 dogs get involved in the annual Surf Dog competition, on the Coronado Bay beach in Southern California, and are judged on their confidence level, how long they stay on their board and their ability to "grip it and rip it", apparently. In 2012, the So Cal Surf Dogs club managed to get 17 dogs on a board at one time. We're really hoping that happens again this year…

STAY: Andaz San Diego, doubles from $249 a night

Any hotel that has a rooftop pool and bar is a good one in our books. The rooftop of luxe Andaz, in the trendy Gaslamp quarter, properly gets going after dark as the sun sets across the city – come up, grab a glass of happy hour wine and relax on a daybed. The clean decor of the suites (with huge beds to boot) are a great place to unwind after too much frolicking on that rooftop.

DRINK: Craft beer

After surfing dogs, it's craft beer that San Diego is known for. Having morphed into a 'scene' in recent years, the city has several breweries and locally brewed ale dominates its bars and pubs. Try The Yard House in the Gaslamp quarter, which proclaims to have the world's largest selection of draft beer, or the eclectic Hamiltons Tavern in the South Park neighbourhood. Word of advice – probably not best to stick your dog on a surfboard after several pints of San Diego pale ale.
