They are usually very busy on Sunday, when the women of the local community are preparing for church or other ceremonies. The Makoko slum is a community under threat from eviction and built over the polluted waters of the Lagos Lagoon.

These incredible pictures are just 15 of the 111 shortlisted works of outstanding photographic art that will go on show at the Royal Geographical Society in London from 22 June to 10 July 2015. The Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year competition included thousands of entries from around the world. After the exhibition at the Royal Geographical Society (22 June – 10 July 2015), the exhibition will commence a tour of forest venues nationally, supported by the Forestry Commission England.
