For the last 20 years, photographer Edward Burtynsky has been taking to the air in search of the most striking shots of a planet scoured by industry.

A far cry from the beautiful beaches, cityscapes and incredible wonders of biodiversity showcased by most aerial photographers, Burtynsky focusses on the impact of human life on natural resources.

From the salt pans of India to the dry lakes of California, each shot in the gallery above showcases both the immense beauty of nature and the impact of industry.

Edward Burtynsky:Essential Elements, edited and curated by William A. Ewing and published by Thames & Hudson is available to buy now for £45 hardback.

His photographs were recently displayed at Flowers Gallery, London, as part of the Salt Pans/Essential Elements exhibition
