Menorca is often unfairly tarred as the most boring of the Balearics, only patronised by Saga visitors and claustrophobic all-inclusive holidaymakers.

But peel back the stereotypes and it’s more than just a quiet holiday haven: it’s all about burgeoning wine scene and laid-back lush greenery. The Balearic isle’s first luxury boutique hotel has just opened, to coincide with BA launching direct flights to Menorca, which should soon drive sun-seekers to the island.

Torralbenc is the sister hotel to Cap Rocat which opened in its neighbouring party island Mallorca in 2010. Like Cap Rocat, it focuses on simple white-washed elegance. A converted farmhouse, it also boasts great views out over the Med. Plus, being tucked away in 70 acres of countryside, it’s surrounded by farmland and vineyards – wine from which will soon help to kickstart Menorca’s reputation as a European wine destination.

With only 27 rooms, Torralbenc is charming and comfortable – but it’s only open in the summer months, so get yourself there before October. It’s low-key, and might just be the perfect place to kick back after that week-long party over on Mallorca.
