The basics
Indoor metropolitan music festival in Barnsley. Most of the festival venues are within walking distance of each other, clustered around the Town Hall, Market Hill and Peel Square.
The festival
Starting up an urban festival is risky. Take it from us, we once tried to put together a live music weekender in Aberystwyth but it never caught on for some reason. Apparently there's not much of an audience for Slovakian folk music in that corner of Wales.
On the other hand, Live in Barnsley works because it showcases a huge number of diverse artists across loads of different venues, so you will be sure to find something that tickles your pickles. The festival is doing great things to support musicians in Yorkshire, bringing together local artists for one jam-packed day of beer and bands.
Live in Barnsley also works because it's totally free - all you have to do is turn up and enjoy. That attracts people of all ages and walks of life and gives the whole day a wonderfully celebratory and laid back atmosphere.
Our tip
Show your appreciation for the bands (who perform totally voluntarily at the festival) by heading over to the central merchandising area and purchasing some of their music, or even treat yourself to a t-shirt. You deserve it.
