There's a particular kind of British optimism that reads a forecast of "heavy showers" and packs a picnic anyway. Merry People makes boots for exactly those people.

The brand started in Australia more than a decade ago and credits itself with starting the country's ankle-gumboot craze. The idea was to take the humble welly, usually left by the back door and never mentioned, and make it something you'd happily wear to the pub. Its bestseller is the Bobbi, a Chelsea-style ankle boot made from FSC-certified natural rubber. It's 100% waterproof and lined with 4mm of neoprene, the same stuff used in wetsuits, so your feet stay warm and cushioned rather than cold and clammy. The sole has arch support, a grippy tread for slippery stiles, and pull tabs front and back so you can get them on and off without hopping around the hallway.

The boot has a track record, too. The Bobbi was named best rain boot by the New York Times' Wirecutter in 2025 and 2026, and best everyday rain boot by Travel + Leisure this year. Not bad for a welly.

In short, it's a boot built for the full British itinerary: muddy weekend walks in the Cotswolds, blustery coastal paths and rainy days in Bristol. It's also light enough to pack for the trip.

We've teamed up with Merry People to give one Escapism reader a pair of Bobbi boots (RRP £90) in the colour of their choice. Merry People never puts its boots on sale, so this is about as close to a bargain as you'll get. You can finally stop pretending your trainers are fine.
