The basics

Modest Essex family-run festival with a not-so-modest lineup

The festival

Ten years young, Brownstock is run by the Brown clan on their family farm in Essex. The festival had humble beginnings, as it was born as a get-together for little more than 150 people – now it's grown to welcome 6,000 revellers.

Despite Brownstock's growth it has remained fiercely independent and unique. In 2014, the main stage hosted much-loved pop names such as Dizzee Rascal, Razorlight, and The Feeling, while The Good Shed dance tent hosted DJs such as Route 94, Sigma and Mak & Pasteman. Beyond the stellar lineup, the festival has a host of other offerings. The Treehouse Stage - a platform for fresh local talent - has giant birdnest seats, all built by the Brown family themselves. And if the music doesn't appeal, head to The Saloon Bar, the silent disco, electro swing acts, circus performers, and campside open mic sessions…the list goes on.

Our tip

Be sure to try one of the festival's own Aberdeen Angus beef burgers.
