The basics
Big production values, big name DJs all for one weekend in an Stratford airfield.
The festival
As dance music festivals go, there are few that can compete with Global Gathering for superstar DJ bookings. You can count on David Guetta or Steve Aoki to headline on any one year but the festival is not quite as international as its name suggests, featuring a mostly Anglo-American mix of DJs and producers – the name refers to the festival’s ambitious plans for world domination, having expanded to numerous countries (Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and South Korea) in 2009.
Not to say there isn’t a range of dance music represented: the main stage strays into pop and legacy dance acts but the smaller stages offer more variety. A number of dance institutions such as Hospitality, Defected in the House, Godskitchen and Circus host their own parties covering everything from drum and bass to house and trance.
With competition from the growing EDM industry in the US, Global Gathering has been upping its production values in recent years to put on an even more ridiculous spectacle. It’s worth checking out the Bunker stage in particular, which looks like something out of Tron.
Unfortunately, Global Gathering have decided to not hold a festival in 2015, so come back in 2016 for updates!
Our tip
It might seem like a party-killing piece of advice but buy some decent earplugs, unless you want to spend the following week with what sounds like a fax machine stuck in your head.
