The basics

The sounds and lifestyle of America's Deep South. But in Suffolk.

The festival

Yeeeee-hah. Get the lassoo. Kick your spurs up. Brand the cow. These are the sort of sentences you might hear at Red Rooster, a celebration of old-school R&B, blues and Americana in sunny (maybe) Suffolk. Food plays just as big a part of Red Rooster festival, with some of the UK's best food vendors bringing southern style to the party. This year, expect vegan junk food from Club Mexicana, hangover-curing brunches at The Breakfast Club and tons of smoky, meaty BBQ joints, plus gumbo. Lots of it.

Oh, mister, you's giving me the vapours.

What's more, there's plenty on offer for the kids (if you're not leaving them with Ma and Pa), with open cornfields, shady woodlands and a 'gator lake. Hopefully there aren't any real alligators, but if the kids start acting up you can at least tell them there are to keep them quiet.

Our tip

The human body doesn't digest corn well. That's why you see it in turds. Be careful not to overdo it on the corn.

Getting there

How do I get there?

By train: The direct train from London is Liverpool St to Stowmarket. The trains leave every hour on the half hour and it is the London to Norwich train. It's about 1hr, 20min. The other option is London Kings Cross to Cambridge, then change at Cambridge to Thetford. It's about 1hr, 30 min. The change over waiting time is about five minutes.

by car: Getting to Suffolk County and Red Rooster festival is easier than shooting big fish in a small barrel. If you have a sat nav the postcode is IP24 2QW. If you're travelling from London, don't use it until you are well out of London, otherwise it could take you on a longer route.

London is about 2 hours from the festival.
Norwich is a 30 minute drive.
Ipswich is a 40 minute drive.
Bury St Edmunds is a 25 minute drive.
Cambridge is a 40 minute drive.
Brighton is about 2.5 hours from the festival.

From London take the M11 for Cambridge. Turn left at Junction 9 onto the A11 for Norwich and Newmarket. Bypass Newmarket on the A14. Take the A11 ramp for Thetford/Norwich. Continue onto the A11. Take the exit left to Elveden/Brandon, onto the B1106. Go left off the exit into Elveden, past the Elveden Inn, then take the first left, signposted Local Services. Continue straight ahead on Elveden Road and then turn right, signposted Barnham/RAF Honington. Continue onto Barnham Road, straight over the traffic lights and through Barnham Village. At the T-Junction, turn right onto the A1088. After 150m, Euston Hall entrance will be on the left - IP24 2QW.

By coach: There is also a direct National Express coach service from London to Thetford. It takes about two and a half hours.

By taxi: There is a taxi firm at the Stowmarket station – Stowmarket Taxis. A taxi to Euston is around £25 and it's about a 25 minute cab ride. Thetford is ten minutes from Euston. A taxi should be around £10.
