KUMASI, GHANA by Sophie Herbert This photo was taken at a waterfall near Kumasi, Ghana. The lady is celebrating a special day out; she is a full-time carer for disabled orphans at Hand-in Hand Community (local name Peace of Christ operationhandinhand.nl/engels.htm). In 2011 Hand-in-Hand teamed up with a medical school charity, SKIP UCL (Students for Kids International Projects skipkids.org.uk/projects/ skip-ucl-ghana), which sends volunteers like me to stay and work in the project for two months a year. We offered our medical knowledge of conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy and epilepsy, while the carers taught us the practical and emotional skills required to tend to and nurture the children.
