Wandering through forests where evergreen trees are frosted with a brilliant white meringue of snow; cutting a perfect line down a broad groomed piste; enjoying the fairytale romance of the country that inspired the Brothers Grimm… these are all things that you can do during the winter in Germany, and things that you can pursue with a healthy conscience, as Germany offers some of the most sustainable sports tourism in Europe.

Here, we’re delving into some of our favourite German winter sporting activities, so you can make your 2025 travels more memorable than ever.

Snowy Oberammergau

Perfect Powder

Germany has a superlative array of skiing, catering for all skill levels, from the inexperienced to the expert. Across the six provinces of Hesse, Saxony, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, you’ll find a veritable treasure trove of snowy slopes.

Take Hesse, for example, which offers several mountain ranges teeming with skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and tobogganing, including famous winter sports areas including the Vogelsberg, the Odenwald, the Upland, the Rhön and the Taunus.

However, in this day and age, skiers and snowboarders are often looking to go to the most snow-sure destinations, and this is exactly what you’ll find in Bavaria, including the 2,962-metre-high Zugspitze.

Cross-country skiing in Harz

Channel the romance of the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg and ski one of the state’s excellent areas, such as Feldberg/Seebruck, Unterstmatt, Haldenköpfle or Hofeck.

In Saxony and Lower Saxony, you’ll find beautiful white pistes tucked in amongst the region’s famous castles and palaces. Head to the Ore Mountains for reliable snow-covered slopes or to the Harz mountain range, which offers 13 alpine ski areas with 53 slopes, 39 toboggan runs and 500 kilometres of cross-country ski trails.

Alternatively, pack your warm clothing and head to North Rhine-Westphalia and the Wintersports-Arena in the Sauerland, with over With over 120 slopes for skiing, snowboarding and sledges. No matter where you decide to visit this winter, you can be sure it will be packed with fun, frivolity and old-fashioned hospitality.
