Val Gardena lies in the heart of the Italian Dolomites, where dramatic scenery provides an unforgettable winter holiday. Set within a Unesco World Heritage Site with breathtaking views of the South Tyrolean Dolomites’ summits and the symbol of the valley, the majestic Sassolungo Group Val Gardena sits in the legendary Sellaronda – one of the best-known ski circuits in the world – where ultra-modern lifts allow access to 500km of ski slopes, 115km of cross country ski trails and 30km of winter hiking paths. Not to mention it is also home to the legendary Saslong World Cup slope.

Val Gardena is one of the world’s leading snowsports resorts since hosting the World Ski Championships in 1970 and has been chosen to host again in 2031. Together the three villages of Ortisei (1,236m), Saint Cristina (1,428m) and Selva Val Gardena (1,563m) create this vast, unrivalled snow bowl.

Taste sensation

Outstanding culinary experiences can be found in three places with Michelin awards in Val Gardena: the Alpenroyal Grand Hotel, in Selva di Val Gardena, headed by Mario Porcelli, a Michelin chef; the Anna Stuben at the Hotel Gardena, in Ortisei, with Michelin chef Reimund Brunner and the fine-dining Suinsom in the Hotel Tyrol in Selva with chef Alessandro Martellini. All three chefs interpret and merge the cuisine of the two cultures, obtaining sublimely refined results.

Sleigh bells ring

Val Gardena is home to the longest sleigh run in the Dolomites, where 6km of action-packed sledging terrain unfolds. Catch the Ferrari-designed Resciesa gondola from Ortisei to Alpe Resciesca at 2,200m and hop on board a beautiful sleigh ride by day or night.

Steeped in ancient geological history, where deep seas gave rise to the mighty Dolomite mountain range millions of years ago, Val Gardena showcases artefacts from a bygone era in the Gherdeina Museum. Step back in time on journey starting millions of years ago, delving in the geology, flora and fauna and archaeology, housing fossils and ancient tools. Visit the giant Ichthyosauras skeleton, found above Seceda, resembling today’s whale species, dating back 240 million years.

Craft

Val Gardena is also the cradle of South Tyrolean art, specifically wood carving. At the start of the 17th century, locals used their creativity and craftsmanship to create wooden objects and sculptures. To this day, this art represents an important economic branch for the valley, only second to tourism. New for this season, a ‘Craftswomen from Val Gardena’ exhibition opens from 1 to 16 March 2025, showcasing artworks from 25 women from the area.
