The basics

With 2,000 artists, more than 600 hours of entertainment and over three million visitors expected, Austria’s Donauinselfest is huge – in all ways.

The festival

Unless you happen to be Austrian, there’s a good chance you’ve never even heard of Donauinselfest, yet visitor numbers hitting the 3 million mark make this one of the biggest music festivals on the planet. It’s a big deal.

Held on an island in the middle of the Danube river in Vienna (the name translates as 'Danube Island Fest'), Donauinselfest has been going for more than 30 years and shows no signs of letting up. With such a vast number of artists on show (more than 2,000 in total), every kind of music is represented, from dance and alternative rock to classical and folk – much of it pulled from the domestic scene.

Perhaps the biggest draw, however, is that amazingly it won’t cost you a thing to get in. Who ever said nothing comes for free?

Our tip

The Rock the Island contest gives unsigned bands and artists the chance to perform on one of the festival’s big stages following an X Factor-style audition process. Do you have the X Factor? (Let’s face it: probably not.)
