The basics
The world’s biggest world party sets up shop in New Zealand, a perfect home from home.
The festival
World of Music, Art and Dance (or WOMAD) festivals have been running since in 1982 and have been the brainchild of Peter Gabriel no less, who aimed to bring people together to learn about different cultures through the mediums of music, art and dance. To this day WOMAD is still the biggest world music festival out there - it’s hosted festivals in 27 countries, and that now includes New Zealand!
There’s so much to do at WOMAD, from singing, dancing, crafting or music workshops for adults and kids (it’s a very family friendly few days) to global markets, cooking stages, holistic areas, poetry corners - this really is a chilled out festival where you can explore the whole world in a few days in a field. And as expected nowadays, you don’t have to rough it with a variety of glamping options.
Our tip
Don’t miss the Living Library, where borrowers can be lent a book (rather than a human) to tell them a story for 30 minutes. A great way to learn about different cultures.
