TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2013 NOW OPEN

If you think your point-and-shoot holiday snaps are works of unparalleled beauty and the result of a rare creative genius, it’s time to put your money – or at least your celluloid – where your mouth is. This year’s Travel Photographer of the Year competition is open for entries, with the winner’s prize-haul including £5,000, a collection of Cutty Sark whisky and a bespoke surfboard. Before you send off your entry and wait for the postman to turn up with a giant cheque, it might be worth checking out the calibre of the competition. The remarkable shot of a quiver tree under starry Namibian skies by Marsel van Oosten was one of last year’s winners, while Jan Schlegel’s crocodile-wearing Ethiopian tribesman is taken from a portfolio of photos that finished runner-up. Time to think beyond those pictures of you pretending to hold up the leaning tower of Pisa…

Entries for Travel Photographer of the Year close on 1 October. See tpoty.com for more details.
