The basics
Diminutive German festival in a weird and wonderful industrial setting, with an eclectic underground (and above-ground) lineup.
The festival
If you’re looking for a small, intimate festival held among the industrial clutter of a disused mine, look no further than Germany’s Melt!. Held at Ferropolis – a unique museum where giant excavators loom large over a narrow peninsula – the festival has a cult following among devotees who have seen its stock and popularity rise since it started in the late ‘90s.
The lineup is as offbeat as the scenery, with alternative rock, electronica, soul and hip hop all represented.
With a lake you can swim in, an approach to sustainability that stands out even in the right-on world of festivals (there are solar panels, power generating bikes, and clear labelling for eco-conscious food stalls), and a thoughtfully curated lineup, Melt! is a breath of fresh air.
Our tip
In 2013, on the Friday festivalgoers were encouraged to go meat free, with artists setting the tone.
