DO: Hogmanay, 30 December - 1 January

There's a lot that the Scots do well - not least haggis, tartan and, er, boozing. Edinburgh's annual Hogmanay is the biggest New Year's Eve bash in the world, and all the action kicks off on 30 December with 7,500 torchbearers doing a torchlight procession through the city centre. Then on New Year's Eve itself, there's a huge cracker of a street party, involving a barn dance and a firework display. Biggest is always best, folks. edinburghfestivals.co.uk

STAY: The Glasshouse, Greenhouse Row. Doubles from £179 a night

Don't expect to spend much time actually in your hotel during Hogmanay. But if you do decide to get some kip, there are far worse places to lay your head than boutique hotel The Glasshouse. It has views over Calton Hill and the city's new town, blends old and new design and is a short stumbling distance from the action. theglasshousehotel.co.uk

EAT: Wannaburger, Queensferry Street

Either you'll have spent all your money on beer, or you'll be too gone from the celebrations to appreciate anything else. Whatever the reason for your burger hunger, head to Wannaburger in the West End - they serve up locally sourced Scottish patties and shakes at McDonald's prices. It's got to beat a deep-fried Mars bar, right? wannaburger.com
