DO: Festivals. August-September

You've got Dubrovnik for romance (and Game of Thrones geekery) and Hvar for beach partying, but if you're a festival-head there's only one Croatian city you want to head to. As well as Outlook (3-7 September, tickets from €136), Pula also hosts D&B/EDM rave-up Dimensions (27-31 August, tickets from €136). This year's line-up features Metro Area and Moodymann among others. Don't worry – we haven't heard of them either.

STAY: Park Plaza Belvedere Medulin, rooms from €134

If you want to turn a festival weekend into something a little longer (and comfier), go just outside the city to the village of Medulin, where you'll find some much-needed respite in the form of Park Plaza's Belvedere Medulin Hotel. It packs in a wellness spa, two swimming pools and, for some reason, six football pitches – perfect for obliterating the festival hangover. parkplaza.com

DO: Pula Arena

If you've been to the Colosseum in Rome then, er, this isn't too dissimilar. It is well worth a look, though – you'll get a superb walk around one of Croatia's best-loved relics in all its aesthetic glory. And it's not just a ruin – the Arena hosts concerts all year round and even a film festival in mid-July. ami-pula.hr
