SOUNDWAVE FESTIVAL, 28 FEBRUARY & 1 MARCH 2015

You can expect some of the biggest rock acts from around the world at this hard-core music fest. When we say rock, we mean proper rock, and this year's line up includes the Smashing Pumpkins, Incubus, the Vandals and, er, Papa Roach (they aren't our last resort, we still love them). The fest runs over two days, which means fewer clashes and less hotfooting it from one side of the park to the other, arriving just as your fave band finishes their set. soundwavefestival.com

SYDNEY FISH MARKET

Make the most of Sydney's prime coastal position with a trip to the Sydney Fish Market, the third largest fish market in the world. Fishing fans can get there early doors (we're talking 6am) for a thorough tour, but if you're more into eating than observing, the market is also crammed with some of the best seafood cafes in the city. Nab a picnic table next to the shore and try calamari, prawns and sushi. sydneyfishmarket.com

SHELLY BEACH

Tourists may flock to Bondi Beach (granted, it is nice) but for something a little more under the radar head to Shelly Beach in Manly. The abundant marine life and shallow water makes it a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Fidgety sunbather? Talk a walk along the bush track for spectacular views of the Northern Beaches. sydney.com
