Is it a horseshoe? Is it a doughnut? Nobody actually knows – but China’s latest hotel is certainly a looker.
As it happens, the Sheraton Huzhou Hot Spring Resort, on the outskirts of mega city Shanghai, is also a super high-end hotel as well as being an architectural maverick.
As one might expect from China, the 27-storey structure on Lake Taihu, designed by Ma Yansong, has porticos and ceilings inlaid with jade (to symbolise wealth, natch), a grand ballroom and a ‘spa village’.
And its horseshoe shape? Because a circular shape in Chinese culture means unity and wholeness, of course.
