BATHE: SZECHENYI BATHS

Forget a meaty Budapest breakfast as a hangover cure – the thermal baths are where the real recovering from the night before is done. The Szechenyi Baths are the city’s biggest, with15 indoor baths and three huge outdoor pools. Decked out in art nouveau style, they’re criminally photogenic (and super warm, even in winter). The best bit is a whirlpool right in the middle, which basically means you’ll be squeezed up against other bathers at speed. It’s fun, honestly. szechenyibath.hu

STAY: GRAND PENTHOUSE, AIRBNB

Aside from dodgy local moonshine, cheap food and stunning architecture, the best thing about Eastern Europe is the ability to lay your head in a penthouse for a fraction of the price. Airbnb’s grand penthouse in the Kazinczy Street District is mercifully close to the bars and clubs of the area (including Szimpla Kert), and is spacious and bright. It sleeps six, which means plenty of space to party. From £85 a night; airbnb.co.uk

DRINK: SZIMPLA KERT

The best-known watering hole in Budapest, Szimpla Kert is an old ‘ruin pub’, which basically means it’s rough, ready and stuffed with hipsters day and night. It’s full of secret nooks and crannies, with everything from fishing net to foliage strung up above your head, and you’ll sit on everything from a pool table to an old bathtub. It’s so trendy there’s a selfie machine and t-shirts on sale – but do you really care when you can buy three G&Ts for under a tenner? szimpla.hu
