A stream runs past the house, its sound carrying softly through the stillness for much of the year. Chalet Falk sits at 1,323 metres in St. Oswald, above Bad Kleinkirchheim in southern Austria's Carinthia. Up here, the usual noise falls away, leaving water over stone, wind in the spruce and the occasional gondola making its way up the valley towards the pistes.

It isn't a hotel and doesn't pretend to be. The whole 250-square-metre house belongs to one party at a time, up to eight guests, with nobody on the other side of the wall. You get the garden, the glass, the fire, and the spa, plus the freedom to use it all exactly as you like. The point isn't the floor area. It's the feeling of having somewhere this considered entirely to yourself.

The design is the draw. Alpine-Japandi is the shorthand interiors magazines reach for, and Chalet Falk is part of why: alpine timber and stone handled with a Japanese sense of restraint, and glass fronts so expansive the mountain becomes part of the interior. The spa is yours for the length of the stay. There's a heated stainless-steel pool, awarded at the 2025 bsw Pool Awards, a panoramic sauna facing the peaks, and a quiet room designed for doing very little at all. After a day on the snow, a rhythm quickly establishes itself: pool, sauna, fire, repeat.

Service is discreet to the point of near-invisibility. Breakfast arrives at the door each morning and is included in the rate. Everything else is there when you want it – a private chef for dinner, a massage, a yoga session or a guide who knows which mountain to take you up and when. There is no lobby, no restaurant schedule and no reason to change for dinner unless you feel like it.

Winter is the obvious hook, and it holds up. The St. Oswald gondola is just a few minutes away, and the linked ski area stretches across around 100 km of pistes in Bad Kleinkirchheim and St. Oswald. Turracher Höhe and Gerlitzen are close enough to turn a week here into a proper tour of Carinthia's ski terrain. Yet skiing is only part of it: slow mornings, forests under snow, and the short, cold walk from fire to sauna.

It would be a mistake, though, to think of Chalet Falk as a winter-only address. In summer, the Nockberge take over, with hiking and biking from the door, golf nearby and Carinthia's lakes warm enough for long afternoons in the water. This is Sommerfrische in the old sense: swapping city heat for cool nights, slow mornings at altitude and days that stretch naturally between mountain and lake. Autumn may be the most underrated season of all, when the trails empty, the air sharpens, and the mountains turn gold before the first snow returns.
